Presenting an Abbreviated
Tour of:
HVP-PIV Valuemetric Horizons
Introduction
Nested Within Emerging Miltipolar Science is Axiological Science, Axiological Psychology and the Revolutionary New Metric of Assessing One's General Capacity to Value (Self and World). Multipolar Science is an integration of these advances in our understanding of human values and valuations (human value-vision).
This Web Page Focuses on the Metric of Assessing How One Organizes Core Values and their Sensitivity, Balance, and Order of Influence.
Why is this a big deal? Putting it bluntly, you don't have values; you are your values. They are that important! Values rule all else including faith, spirituality, creativity, love, personality organization, fluid personality states, crystalized personality traits, problems in living, psychopathology and the personality defenses ranging from pro-self, pro-social to anti-self, anti-social. This is not to deny genetic influences in building the platform for cognitive processes dedicated to values, and valuations (value-vision). Brain and the axiological architecture of mind interact. In some cases one rules over the other and you end up with a shift towards anti-self, anti-social behavior, away from pro-self, pro-social behavior, and away from the balanced dynamism given by the selective pressures of biosocial and psychosocial evolution; as well as the immediate demands of adaptation and survival.
Mental life involves map-to-map relations and map-to-fact relations where the "maps" are elements of cognitive processing be they concepts, ideas, theories, ideologies, or images. What we call science is a combination of rigorous map-to-map relations using logic and mathematics and rigorous map-to-fact relations involving empiricism. Axiological Science is born of a marriage of both map-to-map and map-to-fact disciplines. This is to say, axiological science, like all science, is a "marriage" of formal and testable theory on the one hand and empiricism on the other. In fact it is born of the co-play and counter-play between them.
The historic failure to develop a rigorous, elegant, and testable theory of human values and valuations (i.e., habitual evaluative phenomena that comes alive within us over time) blocked the development of a value science. This changed when philosopher Robert S. Hartman, Ph.D. scored a revolutionary breakthrough at the level of theory followed by a psychologist's empirical validation of the theory many years later as summarized in the pages of "The New Science of Axiological Psychology," This advance in how we think about thinking and how we think about ourselves inside our skins and the world outside our skins marks the beginning of an intellectual revolution that rivals Galileo's gift of natural science. Natural science is both a blessing and a curse; for, natural science, without moral science checks and balances, has left us with a tragically flawed civilization. It is a gift that threatens the very survival of humankind.
Humankind has learned, the hard way, it cannot get to a science of values with its historic science of facts (natural science) and that the Pomeroy-Hartman Synthesis has cleared a path for an evolving science of values (an empirical moral science embedded in an empirical value science) to compliment Galileo's science of facts. It now remains for humankind to build on this new science before a growing public cynicism concerning the limitations of historic natural science throws out this baby with its bathwater.
Now, what follows is a considerations of the metric derived from Hartmanian Value Theory known as The Hartman Value Profile (HVP). From the beginning I found it to be a merciful handle on Hartmanian Value Theory and seized upon it as the royal road guiding my long march validating that counter-intuitive theory. I speak of the many empirical studies I conducted, as a scientist-clinician in the field of psychology, aimed at either proving or disproving this theory of values and morals originating in the alien discipline of philosophy rejected by my profession over a hundred years ago. ( Psychology rejected the mother discipline of philosophy a hundred years ago over the defining issue of empiricism ).
In my work HVP-Valuemetrics assumed a central and defining role in the development of empirical axiological science and its foremost applications of axiological psychology and generic Multipolar Science. I now give you this empirically validated metric in the following tour of horizons. I do so without any effort to dumb it down for a general or mass audience.
Popularizing axiological theory, axiological science, axiological psychology, axiometrics and more global Multipolar Science is a work in progress and awaits the contributions of others in years to come. The birth of axiological science, now embedded within the larger world-view of Multipolar Science, promises to trigger an unprecedented clash of paradigms in the 21st century producing conflicts not unlike those encountered by Galileo's introduction of natural science. His work prompted the Catholic Church to place him under house arrest in his day. More recently, the late Pope John apologized for this action of the Catholic Church some four hundred years ago!
In spite of the central role of values in mediating emotions, motivations, and behavior, the concept of "value" is at once the most confusing, most important, and least studied in the field of psychology and the social sciences. Herein lies the tragic flaw in the character of my profession of psychology, the professions of social science, including economics, and of civilizations themselves. With the publication of "The New Science of Axiological Psychology" we have the seeds of a second science of values and morals; destined to compliment the existing science of nature and things. The empirical findings summarized in this book transforms philosopher Hartman's theory of value and morals into a science of values and morals for the first time in recorded history. The Pomeroy-Hartman Synthesis (See: philosopher Hartman's "The Structure of Value," and psychologist Pomeroy's "The New Science of Axiological Psychology") is more than a hypothesis, it is the beginnings of a new science the likes of which we haven't seen since the days of Galileo. However, at the very least, skeptics need to consider it a hypothesis and submit it to independent validations and replications. At the very least this convergence of psychological and philosophical thought in the 21st century must be taken seriously given its profound implications for humankind in the 21st century. Our findings must be submitted to independent testing, validation, and replication by others.
We are a small, international, group of scientists and entrepreneurs who thoroughly appreciate the historic discovery of this second science, axiological science. More than that, many of us are earning a living applying this new science as consultants and coaches in the world of business. We regret axiological science is now couched in the precision language of a new science that puts it beyond the reach of a general audience. Some of us are working on ways to correct this. In the the meantime the power of axiological science is demonstrated by its foremost applications of axiological psychology and HVP-Valuemetrics discussed in general terms in this section. Finally, axiological science is materially and dramatically demonstrated by the many entrepreneurs, around the world today, who successfully employ HVP-Valuemetrics as business as consultants and coaches. I (Dr. Pomeroy) regularly employ HVP-Valuemetrics as an assessment tool in my private practice as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
For those wishing to learn more about this emerging field I suggest you consider attending our annual meetings held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville every October. It is there that the Special Collections Library houses many of the Robert S. Hartman papers and documents concerning the development of Hartmanian Value Theory. Down to Basics
The Metric for Assessing One's General Capacity to Value Self and World (Value-Vision) and One's General Capacity for Moral Reasoning (Moral-VIsion). As you might guess, the discovery of this metric, and the science behind it, is a big deal; but, it's all very new and because it's counterintuitive (i.e., a science beyond good and evil) it will take more than a generation to be understood and applied.
Axiometrics or HVP-Valuemetrics, and Axiological Psychology, are the foremost applications of axiological science born of an empirical validation of Hartman's theory of value (formal axiology) unfolding in the pages of "The New Science of Axiological Psychology"
The "Framework" is Axiologial Science Focusing on Values, Morals, and Thinking about Thinking in the 21st Century
The "Tool" is Dimensional and Categorical Axiometrics or Valuemetrics Promoting Values Appreciation, Values Clarification and Values Measurement for the 21st Century
You will find in axiometrics everything you were looking for in psychometrics and more !
The Foremost Applications of Axiological Science are Axiological Psychology and HVP-Valuemetrics; Accomplishing a Reconstruction of Psychology Around value science Establishing a New Paradigm for all the Social Sciences
Axiometric Instruments:
Standard HVP-PIV-1 Standard HVP-PIV-2
A Parallel Form: Research HVP-PIV-1 A Parallel Form: Research HVP-PIV-2
HVP-Valuemetrics Employs the SHVP-1 and SHVP-2. It Reveals Dimensional Cognitive Axiotypes and Categorical Behavioral Phenotypes...Providing Clinical, Vocational, and Personality Profiles Beyond Anything Provided by Traditional Psychometrics
The key unlocking the mysteries of axiological science and psychology lies in an understanding of the meaning of I, E, S. These are cognitive processing dimensions dedicated to three forms of value-vision forming the architecture and core structure of mind. The co-play and counter-play (dynamisms) among these dimensions builds belief-systems, attitudes, and thought-styles leading to emotions, motivations, transcendental value-vision, faith, and all behavior. We must come to know our IESs as we came to know our ABCs in elementary school. It's that elementary and its all about moral education which gives us tomorrow's preventive psychology today ! Any science of values and morals is a big deal and humankind has muddled throughout history without a science of values and morals and history proves as much. This changes with the publication of "The New Science of Axiological Psychology" amounting to a revolutionary paradigm shift humankind will need more than one generation to digest and apply. We can only hope this happens in a timely fashion; for, the clock is ticking !

The (HVP-PIV Axiometrics) is a POWER TOOL Focusing on and Measuring the Underlying Dimensions of Self, World, Faith, Transcendental Values, Mysticism, Spirituality, Faith, and Moral-Reasoning, Given by the permutations and combinations of Intrinsic (I), Extrinsic (E), and Systemic (S) Dimensions of Valuation radiating through all cognitive structures including beliefs, attitudes, and thoughts. and Thought as Revealed by Hartman's Mathematical Model of Habitual Evaluative Behavior Subsequently Validated by Pomeroy's Empirical Tests and Measures Summarized in the pages of "The New Science of Axiological Psychology." From these Core Dimensions of Valuation (Value-Vision) Emerge all that makes us human.
What is HVP-Valuemetrics? It is a "Family" of HVP Power Tools for Values Appreciation, Values Clarification, and Values Measurement Derived From Hartman's Mathematical Model of Values, Valuations, and Morals. The methodology is empirically validated in the pages of "The New Science of Axiological Psychology."
1. First-Generation HVP-Valuemetrics
Employs the Standard HVP (Links 1 & 2). It is possible to build Parallel Forms of the Standard HVP (e.g.;, the Research HVP (Links 3 & 4). Those who construct parallel forms of the HVP must do their own first generation validity studies. .
2. Second-Generation HVP-Valuemetrics
Derivative Valuemetrics focuses on the application of HVP-Valuemetrics where scoring and interpretive procedures are developed and dedicated to specific applications. This use demands second-generation validity studies.
Valuemetrics is a Value Profiling Methodology Capable of Detecting The Sensitivity (S), Balance (B), and Order-of-Influence (O) of Personally Held Values Organized by Nature or God Around Three Axes or Dimensions of Valuation Identified Below. The Power of These Dimensions is Seeded by Nature, Evolution or God and Because They "Come Alive" Within Us With Use (They are Highly Internalized Core, Value-Structures and Value-Dynamisms). They Shape Our Value-Vision of Self and World!
Our Value Profiling Methodology (HVP-PIV) Identifies These Structures Providing Values Clarification, Values Appreciation, and Values Measurement. This Methodology is Successfully Employed by Business Consultants Over the Years and a "Cottage Industry" Employing Valuemetrics Continues to Grow With Great Success. Many of These Practitioners of HVP-Valuemetrics are Members of the Robert S. Hartman Institute, A Professional Society of Basic and Applied Axiologists. The Work of Axiological Consultants Amounts to An Informal Validation of HVP-Valuemetrics. The Publication of Dr. Pomeroy's Book Provides a Formal Validation of HVP-Valuemetrics and of The Mathematical Model From Which This Methodology is Derived.
Discovering the Intrinsic (I), Extrinsic (E), and Systemic (S) Lenses, Dimensions, or Axes of Mind With Hartman's Mathematical Model of Value and Moral Phenomena, and its Derivative Power Tool of HVP-Valuemetrics; A Value Profiling Methodology.
The Co-Play and Counter-Play of These Axiological Lenses (First, Second and Third Things of Axiological Science and Psychology) Determines The Fate of Individuals and Nations (Collectives). Axiological psychology is all about the axiology of mind (the organization of mind around three core dimensions of valuation) supported on a platform of brain studied by the neuroscientists.
